What does "Aegis" mean?

The aegis and the owl are symbols of Athena, greek goddess of wisdom and handcraft.  (In roman times, she was known as Minerva.)  The aegis is her gorgon-headed shield (she is also the goddess of war), while the owl sits on her shoulder and reveals unseen truths to her.  The aegis and the owl represent strength and insight, hand-skill and mind-work.

If my studies of the classics have taught me anything, it's that specifying a single favorite amongst the gods is tantamount to begging to be struck down by the others.  (Look what happened to Troy after Paris' decision -and they asked him to choose.)  Let's just say I have a special affinity for Athena.
